🌥 a quick self-care in the afternoon 🍵📚
My post-lunch slump hits hard. Every single time. Around 1 or 2pm, my brain just... checks out, and whatever productivity I had going in the morning quietly dissolves.
The obvious fix is coffee. But I've learned the hard way that anything after 12pm ruins my sleep later, so coffee was off the table. Which meant years of trying every tea under the sun, hoping one of them would do the job. Turns out the answer wasn't a special tea at all. It was two things I already liked, combined: green tea, iced.
It's delicious. It's cold, green, with a hint of lemony taste; it quenches the thirst as well as refreshing. And somehow buys me a few real hours of focus for the rest of the afternoon.
The tea itself
I've been using green tea from Osulloc for this. The name is actually a small story in itself — it combines the exclamation "Oh!" with the Korean characters for the snow-covered peaks of Mount Halla ("Sul"), and the green of the tea leaves ("Loc"). A tea named after a mountain and a color, which feels about right for something that resets my whole afternoon.
How I make it
Steep the tea as directed on the packet.
Mix with 320ml cold water.
Stir until blended.
Pour over ice.
That's it. No syrups, no measuring beyond "cold water," it's sweet enough.
The science-y bit
Green tea has caffeine, but it also has something coffee doesn't: an amino acid called L-theanine.
On its own, theanine calms you down. Paired with caffeine, it seems to cancel out the jittery, wired feeling caffeine usually brings so you get alert, but not buzzy. Focused, but not on edge.
Matcha has even more of both caffeine and theanine than a regular steeped green tea bag, since you're drinking the whole ground leaf instead of just steeping it and tossing it out. Which probably explains why matcha days feel a notch calmer-but-sharper than my usual iced green tea.
Why it works for me
What's different is that I can enjoy it cold, it's something I actually enjoy drinking rather than just tolerating, and it doesn't come with the sleep tax. If you're someone who tries to be deliberate about how you spend your afternoon — a fellow productivity-wit, if you will, it might be worth testing on your own slump before reaching for the usual coffee reflex.
The Ossuloc Matcha Stick deserves a spot in your afternoon tea-cup.
The perfect tea to escape the afternoon slump.
Matcha-riffic.
